Whether you are brand new to ecommerce or you have been online since the start of the internet, this will probably be NEWS to you :-) After reading this, you'll be able to save yourself hundreds or thousands of dollars yearly. Most merchant processors have a boatload of monthly & setup fees that they "waive" in order to be your friend, gain your business, and rip you off monthly for years to come. Eventhough you search and search to find the very best rate you can negotiate on your credit card fees, you always know that something better has to be out there. That's worse than the needle in the haystack because these merchant processors each have their own convoluted monthly statements which require a 6 week course just to understand them. So, when a salesman calls you out of the blue and wants to compare your current processor statement with "his fees", it is impossible to know if he's really comparing apples to apples on the comparative analysis that he sends to you. The only way to have a meaningful idea of any possible savings is to switch processors and then compare the statements proportionally. Then, you really need to average them over the year since there are over 300+ "special cards" with extra non-qualified fees that you may receive one week but not the next! I'm referring to rewards cards, corporate cards, foreign cards, etc... So, after switching processors for several months you begin to have an idea of just how bad that sales guy was pulling your leg :-) If you're lucky, your fees won't go up: they'll stay about the same. However, the next "Visa / Mastercard Mandated" rate increase will take care of that. Anyway, over the years I wasted hours dealing with these scheisters and slowly learned a little more from each one that called wanting me to fax our last 3 months of merchant statements over so they could give me their best uppercut! Now, I was never stupid about it. I never bit on their 48 month lease of the terminal for $60 per month. You can buy one new for $169. In fact all of my merchant account rates were low enough that almost every salesman that called said that they could not beat our rates (that is, after I learned the right questions to ask). Enough said, here's what you need to know...
